When France's giant condom balloon makes its way to the United States, it will not be heading down 34th Street in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The giant condom, called "Condomfiere," is a part of a marketing plan in France to help promote World AIDS Day, reports AOL News . It's not just the sexual nature of the balloon that would prohibit Condomfiere to be paraded down Broadway -- it's also its gigantic size. Floats in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade are limited to 70 feet in length, 40 feet in width and 78 feet in length. This rule was established in 1997 by New York City officials after a parade spectator was injured when the "Cat in the Hat" balloon hit a lamppost, causing falling debris, according to The New York Times. The condom balloon stretches to 120 feet and has room for a pilot and three passengers. That’s almost twice as big as what is allowed in the parade. Condomfiere will be going on a five-continent tour to help bring AIDS awareness by passing out health information. The campaign was started by CondomFly, which is a safe-sex organization in France. The giant condom balloon is currently on display at the Palais de la Decouverte and will then travel to Vienna for the 18th International AIDS Conference in June before it takes its worldwide tour, reports AOL News . 01/02/2010 - Source: USA Today |
